I never met a painting I didn’t like. Sure, there is art that talks to me. It absolutely pulls me in and mesmerizes me. In others, I appreciate the technique, color, form, texture, or image. But because art is so subjective, I take the time to look at a painting and wonder, not only about the image on the canvas, or board, but, about the artist. Who is this artist? Why this theme? This medium? This size?
And so, I was extremely surprised when I went to see show at Qbix this month. I actually didn’t want to see blood painting. Just the thought of a canvas with blood was enough for me to say, not this show. A blood show is the remains of a victim on the sidewalk after a crime. It’s the taped off crime scene evidence, but it’s not art. So I was surprised when I walked in to talk to the Gallery and discovered Jordan Eagle’s work. Like I said, I can always find something I like at a show. It was minimalist, but it wasn’t offensive. In fact, it was clean and playful. And each painting was carefully sealed in a thick coat of resin that actually begged to be touched. Touch blood? In these days of AIDS and blood warnings, this art was a Rorschac test of the 21st century. Red is a good luck color, isn’t it? The paintings were in your face questioning, “Do you dare fall in love with me? I am primitive, yet bold, untouchable, yet begging to be discovered and resurrected. Like a soul; alive and vibrant.
